In 2024, one might think that the cause of women is the object of a unanimous consensus.
Some people, and sometimes none, still say that it's not a subject today.
There are also women and men who, as studies accumulate, note - disappointed or angry - that this subject is clearly not a unanimous cause.
Whatever the case, there is a need to act, to bring about unanimity on what already seems obvious to some: there is no objective reason, moral, political or physiological, to exclude half of humanity from the public arena. This willingness to intervene, both in public debate and in concrete actions, is intended to demonstrate that a society can transform itself when it decides to do so.
It is for these reasons that the Association Française des Orchestres has decided to organize a European composition competition dedicated exclusively to women, as part of the Unanimes! event. With women composers.
In recent years, it seems to us that it has become unanimously obvious that a woman should conduct an orchestra. We hope that we will soon no longer have to count the number of women composers in the programming offered to the public by all those involved in the music world, and that we will be able to look forward to reading and hearing as many women composers as men in orchestral seasons.
Once these obvious facts have become part of our subconscious, once we no longer have any argument for not including this or that section of the population, we may well be proud to have contributed to greater social justice. This is the ambition of the member orchestras of the Association Française des Orchestres, who are unanimous in their desire to play their part in a world undergoing profound change.
