Bohemia has little in common with Bohemia, yet the spirit of Bohemia is not so far removed from the spirit of Bohemia, and Mitteleuropa culture is a source of inspiration for artists from all horizons.
Born in Polička, then located in the Kingdom of Bohemia, Bohuslav Martinů composed his iconoclastic Revue de Cuisine in 1927. At the time, he was living in Montmartre and leading a... bohemian life! A truculent love story between a saucepan and its lid, La Revue de cuisine evokes the sound of the small jazz ensembles fashionable at the time. Leoš Janáček's music is also imbued with a pastoral freshness. Each movement of his Concertino for piano and winds describes amusing childhood memories and scenes of nature - again, in Bohemia. Miroslav Srnka and Nina Šenk's works for trumpet and piano or marimba, meanwhile, offer a view of strangeness and melancholy poetry.
