The program
The 5th Forum des Orchestres will debate the future of symphony orchestras, following on from the 2021 Forum hosted by Cité musicale-Metz. Plenary sessions and workshops will provide an opportunity to assess the challenges facing the sector today, and to map out the orchestra of 2030. Three main themes will be addressed: the public service of music, the profession of orchestral musician and the spectator experience.
The 5th Forum des Orchestres will :
- Communicate the realities and missions of permanent orchestras today and tomorrow;
- Present and debate the "Orchestras 2030" strategic document, drawn up by the Association Française des Orchestres and its members, in which the profession sets out 23 concrete proposals for overhauling national and regional instrumental music policies.
This event is aimed at national and local elected representatives, as well as representatives of the Ministry of Culture and the cultural departments of local authorities, and orchestra managers and their teams. It is also intended to bring together all orchestral professionals, including musicians, public and private partners, general and specialized teaching staff, and anyone interested in the human, artistic, political and organizational dimensions of the orchestra.

While the missions of creating, producing, distributing and transmitting works remain at the heart of their public service activities, orchestras are constantly undergoing transformation: broadening their missions, evolving their means of action, transforming their organizational models, and so on. Their situation, at the crossroads of the expectations of their many partners, obliges them to be adaptable and reinforces their adaptability: the sustainability of orchestras, like that of public services, can only be guaranteed by their ability to adapt to the realities of the world and to assert their fundamental missions.

> Governance bodies: towards greater representativeness (Workshop F1)
To date, the orchestra's governance bodies mainly include its public funding bodies. The desire to be part of a CSR approach, which meets the need to take into account the expectations of a territory and those of employees, leads us to question the possible means of expression for the orchestra's various stakeholders within the governance bodies: the public, artists, patrons, representatives of the educational and social sector, and so on.

> Administrative and technical professions: new relationships at work (Workshop G1)
The recent health crisis has highlighted the emergence of new relationships at work, the desire for a better balance between professional and personal life, while the expansion of missions has led to an increase in the complexity of management tasks. How does the orchestra support these changes, both structurally and individually? What levers - organizational, human, etc.? - can the orchestra mobilize to redefine its corporate culture and promote fulfillment at work?
- Marie Linden, General Manager, Orchestre philharmonique de Strasbourg
- Claire Serre-Combe, Deputy General Secretary, Synptac-CGT
- Thierry Teboul, General Manager, AFDAS
Moderator: Clément Louyot, Administrative and Financial Director, Auditorium-orchestre national de Lyon
> Cooperation, pooling, mergers: issues, risks and prospects (Workshop Q1)
Calls for collaboration - whether in the form of cooperation, pooling or even merger - are legion, particularly in times of crisis and dwindling resources. While they are an opportunity to create ambitious projects by sharing human, technical and financial resources, they are not without risks and constraints. What forms of cooperation should be favored, depending on the projects and objectives set by public authorities? What resources and best practices should be put in place to ensure successful collaboration, whatever the form?
Keynote address: François Bou, Managing Director, Orchestre National de Lille
- Anne-Sophie Brandalise, General Manager, Orchestre de Paris

15h30-16h | Break
16h - 17h | Plenary 3 - The permanent artist in 2030: what profession?
Nothing changes and everything changes in the profession of orchestral musician. The musician remains an artist and a craftsman, responsible for the sensitive transmission of works to the public, as well as a virtuoso hyper-technician with a little-known profession. All this in a society undergoing profound change, in which the artist is both witness and subject. What role will the permanent artist wish to play in the future to meet society's expectations? How can we support them? How can we enable artists to fulfill their potential and become increasingly engaged citizens?
- Manus Carey, Associate Director (Performance and Programs), Royal Northen College of Music (RNCM)
- Lise Declerck, cello, Orchestre Français des Jeunes
- Jonathan Di Credico, principal bass clarinet, Orchestre national de Metz Grand Est
- Nicolas Marco, percussion, Orchestre Français des Jeunes

17h-18h30 | Simultaneous workshops
> Musicians' missions: formalizing and transforming uses (Workshop F2)
Over the past 20 years, orchestras have considerably broadened their audiences, challenging those involved (artistic, administrative and technical teams) to implement new projects. These new activities must be compatible with the orchestra's human and financial resources. Working hours, salary costs, fatigue and its consequences on career longevity - these are all factors that prompt us to reflect on the working environment of permanent artists. In concrete terms, how can we translate the full breadth of the profession's components into job descriptions? And how can we anticipate the consequences on the offer to the public, the organization of collective and individual work, and budgets?
Keynote address: Clémence Quesnel, Assistant Director, Association Française des Orchestres
- Sophie Bollich, violin, Orchestre national des Pays de la Loire
- Guillaume Hebert, General Manager, Orchestre symphonique de Mulhouse
- Alexis Labat, General Manager, Orchestre national Avignon-Provence
Moderator: Alice Nissim, Administrator, Orchestre national d'Île-de-France
> Musicians, key players in the transmission of knowledge (Workshop G2)
The Association Française des Orchestres has chosen to use the term "transmission" to designate all forms of address to the public, whether by the orchestra's organization or by the musicians themselves. Among these, the musicians' interventions cover a very broad field, from awareness-raising to education to the social sector in the broadest sense. Defining the skills and role of artists is essential to the development of civic projects, and so is training the artists who wish to take part in them. How can we make this clearer, so as to give everyone the full scope of their role and strengthen the ability to create projects?
- Stanislas Kuchinski, double bass, Orchestre de Paris / teacher, conductor, arranger and producer
- Nathalie Perrin-Gilbert, Deputy Minister for Culture, Lyon
- Thierry Weber, Professor of Music Mediation, Haute Ecole de Musique et Conservatoire de Lausanne
Moderator: Frédéric Morando, General and Artistic Director, Orchestre de Pau Pays de Béarn
> Backstage and onstage, the realities of musicians' lives (Workshop Q2)
Musicians are best known for the image they portray on stage. But how well do we know the behind-the-scenes aspects of this profession, the investment it entails from the long years of training to the competitive exams, the obligation to maintain one's level throughout one's career, the need to constantly consolidate one's physical and psychological health? As an artist, he is also a craftsman, constantly working on his virtuosity and expressiveness. As an employee of a collective, he is also a player involved in the life of his organization and the realities of the territory whose inhabitants he serves.
- Clément Carpentier, Head of the Instrumental Disciplines Department, Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris
- Baptiste Gibier, principal oboe, Orchestre National de Lille

David Lucot, architect and doctoral student in urban planning
10h-11h | Plenary 5 - The spectator experience 2030: matching desires
We live in a society of abundance, and culture is no exception. Cultural hyper-consumption is at the heart of a paradoxical injunction: it should be reduced for ecological reasons, but at the same time reinforced to promote individual and collective emancipation. After decades of public policy aimed at democratizing culture, and since the advent of digital technology, spectators have never had access to as much cultural content as they do today. Paradoxically, concert-goers and concert organizers sometimes seem to have never been so lost in the face of this abundance of possibilities: how do we match our desires?
- Nicolas Bucher, Director, Centre de musique baroque de Versailles
- Célimène Daudet, concert pianist
- Fiona Monbet, violinist and conductor
- Anselm Rose, Managing Director, Rundfunk Orchester und Chöre gGmbH Berlin

11h-12h30 | Simultaneous workshops
> Disability and accessibility: including and bringing people together (Workshop F3)
Like all public services, the orchestra has a legal obligation to make its events accessible and enable everyone to participate in cultural life as independently as possible. While it is necessary to meet this challenge of equal access for all, accessibility also means rethinking, in part, the organization of these events, both in terms of format and content. As orchestras face different constraints, accessibility measures are varied, from the simplest to the most complex. From staff training to new formats, here's some feedback on this "enhanced" welcome.
- Philippe Bouteloup, musician, trainer, founder of Musique et Santé
- Thierry Jopeck, senior civil servant in charge of disability and inclusion, French Ministry of Culture
- Caroline Maby, Head of Cultural Development, Artistic and Educational Activities, Opéra Orchestre national Montpellier Occitanie
- Amar Nafa, General Delegate, Culture relax
Moderator: Thierry Weber, Professor of Music Mediation, Haute Ecole de Musique et Conservatoire de Lausanne
> Orchestres des villes, orchestres des champs: serving all audiences (Workshop G3)
Orchestras, often located in urban areas, may also be called upon to serve rural areas, more or less distant from their headquarters. How do you maintain a close relationship with audiences, satisfactory in terms of content and regularity, when you cover vast territories and don't always have the appropriate facilities?
Opening remarks: Frédéric Morando, General and Artistic Director, Orchestre de Pau Pays de Béarn
- François Bou, General Manager, Orchestre National de Lille
- Julie Cherrier-Hoffmann, lyric soprano
- Marc Feldman, General Administrator, Orchestre National de Bretagne
Moderator: Florence Alibert, General Manager, Cité musicale-Metz
> Selling the orchestra in 2030 (Workshop Q3)
The quantity and forms of public address have grown considerably in recent years. For its part, digital technology, particularly since the covid-19 pandemic, has opened up access to a wide variety of high-quality content from the comfort of home. In addition to the competition between events, cultural or otherwise, there is also competition from digital content, which can be accessed unlimitedly and with limited effort. At a time when train journeys resemble film clubs and our sofas have almost become third places in themselves, how can we continue to nourish a desire for the orchestra and for going out to see live performances? How can we appropriate these new uses to transform the orchestral experience?
- Célimène Daudet, concert pianist
- Emmanuel Hondré, General Director, Opéra National de Bordeaux
- Aurélie Kaufmann, Head of Partnerships and Audience Development, Radio France
- Anselm Rose, Managing Director, Rundfunk Orchester und Chöre gGmbH Berlin
Moderator: Christophe Dilys, producer, France Musique
