Sophie Gail, Ouverture les deux jaloux
Camille Saint-Saëns, Piano Concerto No. 2
Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Symphony No. 4 "Italian
Under the Empire and Restoration, Sophie Gail was the first woman to create operas for the stage. Her comic opera Les Deux Jaloux was successfully presented in 1813. The Overture captivates with its fresh writing in radiant C major.
Saint-Saëns' Second Concerto opens with a cadenza evocative of the organ writing of which Saint-Saëns was a great adept. Virtuoso, the concerto bridges the gap between the classical heritage and the French Romantic tradition, represented by Saint-Saëns in his concerto corpus.
In 1830, Mendelssohn undertook a formative trip to Italy.
His Fourth Symphony casts a radiant light and reflects the young composer's enthusiasm. From the very first bars, the strings display an infectious frenzy, to which the bubbling saltarelle of the finale responds.
