Australian Liza Lim and German Enno Poppe, two composers whose musical imaginations are poles apart, are brought together here by the Ensemble intercontemporain under the direction of the latter for two recent works. Liza Lim's music is inhabited by the spiritual. Born in Australia of Chinese parents, she draws her inspiration from European, Asian and Aboriginal mythologies. Composed in 2000 for the EIC, Spirit Weapons focuses on the weapons found in the tomb of the Marquis Yi de Zeng, who lived in China over 24 centuries ago. For The Tailor of Time, her new work for harp, oboe and ensemble, she turns her attention to the Sufi thought of the Persian poet and mystic Jalaluddin Rumi (1207-1273). Enno Poppe and the Ensemble Intercontemporain have known each other well for a long time. This musical complicity developed over the years has given rise to numerous creations, always surprising. And this is naturally also the case with Blumen, his new work for ensemble. Blumen ("flowers" in German) is a cycle of 15 short pieces, highly structured at the outset, like a well-composed bouquet, to borrow from the floral metaphor, which gradually become disorganized until they form a kind of chaos, a return to the "wild" state.
