As one lover of his music put it, "To speak metaphorically, Rachmaninov locked himself up in his dark room, gave himself mortal scares, then translated his moods onto music paper". Between the gloomy atmosphere of L'Île des morts, inspired by a Böcklin painting depicting the approach of a silent boat through the night, and Danses symphoniques divided between Dionysos and Thanatos, Renaud Capuçon opens the mystical parenthesis of Sofia Goubaïdoulina'sOffertorium, first performed in 1981.
