Fauré, Elegy
We spontaneously associate Pelléas et Mélisande with Debussy's opera based on Maeterlinck's play. But the drama also inspired Fauré and Sibelius, who wrote incidental music dating from 1898 and 1905 respectively. For this concert, choreographed and prepared with amateurs (children, teenagers and seniors), Thierry Thieu Niang takes the musical movement throughout the auditorium. Centered on the characters of Arkel (Pelléas's grandfather) and Yniold (son of Golaud, Pelléas's half-brother), this evening, for which Augusta Read Thomas's work was commissioned, questions the intimacy that develops between distant generations.
