Wolfgang Amadeus, Mozart Divertimento in D
Joseph Haydn, Cello Concerto No. 1
Cécile Chaminade, Concertino for flute
Robert Schumann, Symphony No. 1 "Spring
Nicknamed "my little Mozart" by Georges Bizet, Cécile Chaminade has left us a Concertino adored by flautists for its grace and volubility. These are not the qualities one spontaneously associates with Robert Schumann, one of the most tortured composers alive. But the First Symphony was born in the wake of his long-awaited marriage to Clara Wieck, and it was Schumann himself who gave it the subtitle "Spring"; it conveys the sense of renewal, the vital impetus, the shadowless joy that runs through the score. Mozart and Haydn complete this delightful program.
