Gustav Mahler Symphony No. 1, in D major, "Titan" [55 min] --- Intermission --- Gustav Mahler
The Orchestre National de Lyon and Danish conductor Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider have been cultivating their affinity with Mahler for several seasons now. Here, they also share with Gautier Capuçon their pronounced taste for today's repertoire.
Since the arrival of its seventh Music Director in 2020, and thirty years after its first complete recording under different skies, the Lyon-based ensemble has once again immersed itself in the spellbinding cycle of Mahler symphonies. Not only did the " Titan " mark Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider's conducting debut at Vienna's Musikverein, the score features a polychromatic orchestra powerfully evocative of a new world.
Gautier Capuçon, too, is always on the lookout for virgin territory to expand his instrument's repertoire. He takes the orchestra and conductor with him in a revival of Diary of a Madman, which he premiered in January 2021 - a concerto inspired by Gogol's novella to the Soviet-born American composer Lera Auerbach.
