Shostakovich's Second Piano Trio opens the book of intranquillities with a melody spoken by the cello like a ghostly memory. The score, composed in 1944, is imbued with a heavy atmosphere, and its uneasy tone can take on the mask of chilling irony. In the finalAllegretto , the sense of unease pervades, and the laughter is yellow. Behind this iron curtain, the tension is scarcely less threatening in the Polish Grażyna Bacewicz, whose pulse is taken by Alice Sara Ott and the National soloists.
