Programme

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Overture to The Magic Flute
Guirne Creith, Violin Concerto
Robert Schumann, Symphony No. 4

An initiatory fable, The Magic Flute is a source of wonder and edification. From the very opening, a triple call evokes Masonic symbolism. And in just a few bars - including a breathtaking fugato - Mozart's genius is expressed at its very best. We are gradually rediscovering the work of British composer Guirne Creith (1907-1996). Written in the early 1930s, her Violin Concerto, which includes a seraphic slow movement, superimposes a wide variety of atmospheres and sonorities. It is a worthy counterpart to the creations of Sibelius and the Russian school. Schumann's Fourth Symphony is distinguished by its cyclical form, marked by the periodic return of thematic motifs. The obsessive themes that run through it amplify the mood of the Rhenish Symphony. The frenetic outbursts reflect the composer's unstable personality.
