With the Palazzetto Bru Zane - Centre de musique romantique française, the Orchestre national de Lyon resurrects and records a youthful cantata by Bizet, surrounded by a beautiful rediscovery by Mel Bonis and Ravel's masterpieces, the Rapsodie espagnole and the illustrious Boléro.

efore becoming the immortal composer of Carmen, Georges Bizet was the brilliant pupil of Charles Gounod. To prepare him for the Prix de Rome, a precious sesame for any musical career at the time, Gounod had the teenager work from 1853 on the text imposed the previous year, which had brought bitter disillusionment to Camille Saint-Saëns: Le Retour de Virginie, based on the novel by Bernardin de Saint-Pierre. Two major names on the young French stage, Cyrille Dubois and Marie-Andrée Bouchard-Lesieur, play Paul and his mother, awaiting the return of their sister and daughter. With a heady suite by Mélanie Bonis (who chose the diminutive Mel to break into the male-dominated world of 19th-century composition) and Ravel's timeless Boléro and Rapsodie espagnole, Ben Glassberg confirms his passion for the French repertoire.

In collaboration with the Palazzetto Bru Zane - Centre de musique romantique française. Recorded for Bru Zane Label.

Running time: 1h30 + intermission.
