Jessie Montgomery, "Strum" for string quartet

Although largely overlooked in the history of music, women composers have made a major contribution to the richness of the repertoire, composing works that are just as remarkable as those of their male counterparts. This concert is an opportunity to rediscover the musical heritage of women over the centuries, from the impossible recognition of Fanny Mendelssohn to the resounding success of contemporary composer Jessie Montgomery. Talent and fame don't necessarily go hand in hand, and Fanny Mendelssohn knows all about that! Better known as Felix Mendelssohn's sister, the musically gifted composer did not enjoy the same fate as her brother. Nevertheless, she left behind more than 400 pieces, which her husband Wilhelm Hensel endeavored to publish after her death. Swedish composer and violinist Amanda Röntgen-Maier was more fortunate, enjoying success during her lifetime. Born into a musical family, her father taught her violin and piano from an early age. At the age of 16, she studied at Stockholm's Royal College of Music, where she became the first woman to graduate as a music director. The ultimate proof that women composers are taking revenge on the invisibility they have suffered for centuries, American composer Jessie Montgomery is today one of the most acclaimed and prolific composers of her generation, whose works combining classical music, vernacular, improvisation and poetry are performed on stages the world over.
